IPEN In-Person Electronic Notarization

Traditional Notary activity, but both parties use electronic devices to view, sign, and apply the notarial seal

Common Uses

  • Paperless Closings: Real estate and mortgage transactions that require digital signing platforms

  • Speed and Convenience: Parties prefer to finish and save documents electronically to avoid printing

  • Fewer Errors: Electronic systems prevent you from accidentally missing required signatures.

REN Remote Electronic Notarization

Often called remote online notarization, in which both parties agree to perform the notary act via live video.

This type of notary act is currently not fully implemented or available in North Carolina. While there is high demand, the North Carolina Secretary of State has been cautious to roll out this type of notarial act until the platforms and systems can be vetted to ensure the safety of NC residents and businesses.

There are some exceptions made for emergencies.
